Further details

Skir Dhu is located half way between Englishtown and Ingonish on the Cabot Trail. It is a 30 minute drive from the entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Ingonish and Highlands Links Golf Course and a 40 minute drive from Baddeck, home of the Alexander Graham Bell Museum and Bell Bay Golf Course.

The name “Skir Dhu” or “Sgeir Dhubh” is a Gaelic name which means “Black Rock”.  It is a reference to the rocks that jut out from the ocean just off shore.  The community was originally settled by Gaelic Speaking Highland Scots and traces to the Gaelic roots can still be found among the surrounding communities.  It is a central location to the many attractions around the island and a quiet retreat from the outside world.

The lake is ideal for the paddle boat, canoeing, swimming and birding.  The ocean shoreline is rocky with large beach rocks and is perfect for beach combing.  Nearby are some of Nova Scotia’s most renowned artisans, the famous “Wreck Cove General Store” and the St. Ann’s Gaelic College.
